What is Tinnitus Retraining Therapy?
Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) is based on the Neurophysiological Model of Tinnitus, which was developed by Dr. Pawel Jastreboff and Dr. J Hazell. TRT involves Habituation or desensitization therapy, directive counselling, auditory therapy and sound therapy. Sound therapy is aimed at decreasing the contrast between the tinnitus and the background. Retraining Counseling is aimed at decreasing the level of stimulation from the cortical areas to the autonomic and emotional systems (removing the patient’s negative associations). When hyperacusis (sensitivity to sound) is present; it is to be addressed first.
How Can We Help?
The goal is not to cure tinnitus; our role as audiologists is to help our patient manage the emotional and psychological aspects of tinnitus. The mechanisms of tinnitus using the neurophysiological model of tinnitus are thoroughly explained to the patient, along with directive counselling. The goal of TRT is to make possible the habituation of tinnitus induced reactions and tinnitus perception, resulting in a reduced awareness of the tinnitus.
